Prime Minister attended "the 28th -29th ASEAN Summits and related Summits"

On 6-8 September 2016 H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Minister of Foreign Affairs attended the 28th and 29th  ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Vientiane, Lao PDR. The Prime Minister attended 15 Meetings: the ASEAN Summits, Summits with Dialogue Partners, including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Australia, the United States, India, and the United Nations, ASEAN Plus Three Summit, East Asia Summit and Mekong-Japan Summit.

The Leaders attached importance and agreed to cooperate on the following issues :

(1) strengthening the ASEAN Community through implementing the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the ASEAN Community Blueprints 2016-2025; (2) maintaining ASEAN unity and centrality in the evolving regional architecture to ensure that ASEAN can effectively cope with new and old challenges, especially terrorism and violent extremism, transnational crimes, the situation on the Korean Peninsula, maritime security, including the South China Sea and; (3) enhancing relations with Dialogue partners, especially through expanding economic cooperation by upgrading  bilateral FTAs, striving for early conclusion of the RCEP, promoting MSMEs and connectivity ; and (4) building an inclusive and people-centred ASEAN Community where everyone has a stake and no one is left behind, while raising awareness and creating a sense of belonging among ASEAN peoples through various activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ASEAN next year.

Thailand’s priorities and initiatives during the Summits include the following: (1) the ASEAN Plus Three Statement on Active Ageing; (2) promoting complementarities between the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development ; (3) enhancing connectivity in line with Master Plan on Connectivity 2025 while ensuring effective border management; (4) developing the South China Sea into a Sea of Peace, Stability and Sustainable Development; (5) proposing to host ASEAN-India Trade Fair in 2017 to commemorate the 25th  anniversary of ASEAN-India relations; (6) utilizing ASEAN Connect Project to build a “Creative ASEAN”.

On this occasion, the Leaders have adopted 19 documents including the Master Plan on Connectivity 2025 and Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Work Plan III. The Prime Minister also joined the leaders of nine other ASEAN Member States in signing the Declaration on One ASEAN, One Response: ASEAN Responding to Disaster as One in the Region and Outside Region.
