On 14 June 2022 H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs (DPM/FM) of Thailand, met with Ms. Noeleen Heyzer, the Special Envoy (SE) of the United Nations Secretary-General on Myanmar.

The DPM/FM stressed that it was in Thailand’s interest to see peace and stability in our neighbouring country. Therefore, Thailand stands ready to work with ASEAN, the UN, and the international community to restore peace and support the quest for sustainable solutions for the situation in Myanmar. He also welcomed Ms. Heyzer’s close collaboration with the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair.

The two sides shared updates on the situation in Myanmar which were still very worrisome due to proliferation of the use of violence by various parties compounded by economic hardships, resulting in tragic sufferings of Myanmar people and increased polarisation in Myanmar society. The two sides agreed to appeal to all parties in Myanmar to de-escalate, avoid further violence, and find a practical solution through dialogue, paving the way for the general election next year. DPM/FM stressed that the provision of humanitarian assistance to Myanmar people is a matter of urgency for now and that Thailand stands ready to facilitate the delivery of such assistance into Myanmar as well as to take care of Myanmar people fleeing unrest into Thailand, in accordance with humanitarian principles, international obligations, and its long humanitarian tradition.

Ms. Heyzer appreciated Thailand’s active role in fostering closer cooperation between various parties and in providing assistance to the Myanmar people. She believes that the process toward peace and democracy in Myanmar must be Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned for the sake of the people of Myanmar. Meanwhile, the international community should help create a safe and conducive environment for all parties in Myanmar to engage in talks and dialogue to find appropriate solutions that best fit the context of Myanmar society.
